The most
detailed ever treatment of this remarkable material.
The author, Peter Hayfield, has been involved with "Ebonex"
from its very beginnings and is the named inventor on many of the Patents.
The book describes the initial thinking which led to the early experiments,
and the many problems which had to be solved before the ceramic could
be successfully produced. The equipment used for its production is described
including illustrations. The solid-state physics and chemistry of the
family of titanium suboxides is discussed in detail, citing key literature
references, some of which are obscure. The properties of the material
are summarised, as are the methods used to make electrical connections
to it. Issues of porosity and impregnation are considered.
An extensive review of applications of Ebonex is presented, including
its use in battery construction, as an anode material for cathodic protection
and in a wide range of other electrochemical cells, including swimming
pool chlorinators and the chlor-alkali industry as well as electrode boiling.
Some of these are now fully commercialised, others remain to be brought
to success.
Hundreds of references are included, both publications and patents and
the book brings the reader to the present time, where new and cost-effective
methods for its formation are disclosed, such as plasma spraying, while
a major motor manufacturer has recently reported on its interesting tribological
properties.
